Green + Intelligent Dual Drive! Dry-mix Mortar Becomes a "Hot Commodity" in the Construction Sector Globally

Amid the global wave of construction material upgrading, dry-mix mortar, leveraging its eco-friendly and high-efficiency characteristics, has become a crucial vehicle for promoting green building development in many countries. Its application and development have always centered on environmental protection requirements and functional needs.

From the perspective of environmental management and control, numerous countries have established rigid standards for the environmental performance of dry-mix mortar through legislation. The European Union has explicitly restricted its VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) emissions via policies and mandated improvements in resource utilization efficiency. In China, relying on the Green Building Assessment Standard, ready-mixed mortar has been incorporated into the scope of mandatory use in newly constructed buildings. In 2024, the proportion of dry-mix mortar in China's national government procurement of green building materials reached 7.8%, and market demand driven by policy guidance continues to be released. Meanwhile, the intelligent transformation of production lines and full-process digital management have become the core directions of the industry's transformation. Technological upgrading enables high efficiency and low consumption in the production process, further aligning with the goals of environmental protection development.

In terms of application scenarios, distinct characteristics are observed across different regions. In the Asia-Pacific market, general-purpose dry-mix mortar dominates core application scenarios, being widely used in basic construction processes such as building masonry and wall plastering to meet the demands of large-scale infrastructure and residential construction. In contrast, the European and American markets focus on the promotion of special mortars. For instance, self-leveling mortar is commonly used in commercial floor construction to ensure floor flatness, while tile adhesive is relied on for exterior wall bonding in high-rise buildings to enhance safety and durability.

The application of functional mortar also highlights remarkable advantages. In the field of thermal insulation, lime-based dry-mix mortar, with its moisture absorption and regulation benefits, has become a commonly used material in the construction of passive houses in Europe, accounting for over 30% of the market share. In the energy-saving renovation of buildings in northern China, the application area of polystyrene particle insulation mortar has exceeded 200 million square meters, providing key support for building energy conservation. In waterproofing scenarios, polymer-modified waterproof mortar is widely applicable in areas prone to water erosion, such as underground garages and sewage treatment plants. Its impermeability grade can reach P10, effectively preventing the risk of groundwater seepage.

Looking ahead, the development of dry-mix mortar will further advance towards greater greenization and intelligentization. In the direction of greenization, the proportion of bio-based additives (e.g., starch ether) and industrial solid wastes (e.g., steel slag, tailings) used in dry-mix mortar will continue to increase, helping to reduce resource consumption and carbon emissions. In the field of intelligentization, innovative products such as 3D printing-specific mortar and self-healing mortar have gradually entered the commercialization stage, bringing more technological breakthroughs to the construction industry and driving dry-mix mortar to play a more significant role in the future building system.
